(7 abr. 1726, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, Inglaterra–12 abr. 1814, Chelsea, Middlesex).

Historiador de música británico. Después de ser aprendiz de Thomas Arne, se dedicó a tocar el órgano y a enseñar música. En 1770 inició una serie de viajes por Europa con el fin de investigar para escribir su obra original e influyente Historia general de la música, en 4 vol. (1776–89). Sus relatos sobre muchos músicos famosos y otros que conoció, entre ellos Christoph Willibald Gluck y Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, proporcionan una información entretenida e inapreciable sobre la vida musical e intelectual en general de la Europa del s. XVIII. La novelista Fanny Burney fue su hija.
